Colonoscopy Preparation and Recovery: What to Expect

Even thinking about a colonoscopy may feel intimidating and even a little embarrassing. It’s normal to feel anxious about the process. Many people worry about what the prep will be like, how they’ll feel afterward, or whether the procedure itself will be painful or complicated.

Though colonoscopies are standard, they’re not on anyone’s “Favorite Things” list. The truth is, though, a colonoscopy screening could save your life. With the proper guidance, you can get through the process with confidence and clarity, which is why we’re sharing everything you need to know about preparing for a colonoscopy and what recovery looks like afterward.

Why Colonoscopies Matter

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. In 2025, an estimated 154,000 new cases are expected to be diagnosed.

A colonoscopy is the most effective way to detect and prevent colon cancer. It allows your gastroenterologist to examine the inside of your colon and remove polyps before they become cancerous.

The earlier we find potential issues, the easier they are to treat, so making (and keeping) your colonoscopy appointment is one of the best decisions you can make for your long-term health.

Getting Ready for Your Colonoscopy

  1. Follow the Clear Liquid Diet: The day before your colonoscopy, you’ll need to stop eating solid foods and stick to a clear liquid diet, which includes water, broth, clear juices (without pulp), tea, black coffee, and sports drinks. Avoid anything red or purple, as it can look like blood in your colon.
  2. Take the Prep Solution as Directed: We’ll give you a prescription for a bowel prep solution that will help clear out your digestive tract. It’s crucial to carefully follow the instructions to ensure your colon is clean enough for your doctor to get a clear view.
  3. Plan Ahead: The prep process can keep you close to the bathroom for several hours, so clear your schedule once you’ve taken the bowel prep solution. We recommend staying home, stocking up on toilet paper and soft wipes, and wearing comfortable clothing.

What Happens During the Procedure

A colonoscopy typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. You’ll be sedated so that you’re comfortable and won’t feel any pain. Most patients don’t remember the procedure at all.

Your gastroenterologist will insert a thin, flexible tube with a camera into the rectum to examine the colon. If we find any polyps or other abnormalities, they may be removed or biopsied during the same procedure.

Colonoscopy Recovery: What to Expect

  1. You’ll Feel Groggy: Because of the sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you home from the procedure. You may feel drowsy for the remainder of the day, so plan to rest and take it easy.
  2. Mild Bloating or Gas is Normal: It’s common to experience some bloating or pass gas as the air used during the procedure exits your body. Don’t feel embarrassed, because we hear it all the time, and want you to let the air out.
  3. Gradual Return to Eating Normally: Start with light meals and work your way back to your regular diet unless otherwise instructed.
  4. Keep an Eye on Your Symptoms: A small amount of bleeding may occur, especially if a biopsy was taken, but if you have persistent pain, heavy bleeding, or a fever, call your doctor immediately.
